Useful UK Investing links

Investing can be a bit of a minefield at the best of times (especially with the current world financial issues going on as I write the intro to this thread), and often made worse by tossers trying to screw you over with iffy offers.

This thread is intended to help you filter through the crap, and allow you to invest with as little risk as possible (or at least point you in the direction of resources of reputable places to invest) in the United Kingdom.

To start us off, the UK version of the holy grail of Financial Education, The Motley Fool, and their investing section:
http://www.fool.co.uk/investments/investments.aspx

I particularly recommend reading these articles:

Another website I found useful in my early days of investing on the UK stockmarket way back in early 2005 was EveryInvestor, which you can find here: http://www.everyinvestor.co.uk/

Before you start investing in the stockmarket, anywhere in the world, one MAJOR piece of advice you should remember if you've never done so before, is that one brilliant way of losing money on it is to just snap-up shares willy-nilly just because the company makes your favourite beer, is your favourite sports team (or has connections to them) or because some numpty gave you a "hot stock tip" (which more than likely wasn't).

Instead, you should sit down and do some careful research to see what you're letting yourself in for after making a shortlist of companies to invest in, and use financial forecasts, etc to give you a better idea of how the company is doing (e.g. Got healthy profits coming in, got debt issues, or is well on the way to going down the pan)..... which can make all the difference between making a profit, or losing the lot.
My favourite place for getting all this essential info for UK shares is the QUOTES section on the UK version of the Motley fool: http://quote.fool.co.uk

You can search to find the company's stock symbol, or if you already know them just type them straight in.
Here's a few examples of UK Stock Ticker symbols to demonstrate what I'm on about.........
RBS = Royal Bank of Scotland
BATS = British American Tobacco
BT-A = BT Group
MKS = Marks & Spencer
WLW = Woolworths
LLOY = Lloyds TSB
HSBA = HSBC UK Holdings
CBRY = Cadburys
BARC = Barclays

If you've never invested on the Stockmarket before, I've always thought it a good idea to get some practice in via one of the online fantasy stockmarket games so you can get your head round how to do it without losing any of your own real money.

For practising with the UK stockmarket I recommend this place:

If the recent turmoil on the financial markets has gotten you thinking "Erm, I think NOT!" about investing on the stockmarket, there are other ways to invest your money in the UK more safely, such as:

Good old fashioned Premium Bonds from National Savings & Investments: http://www.nsandi.com/products/pb/index.jsp

and........

Lending out money via Social Lending website ZOPA at Interest rates YOU choose yourself: http://www.zopa.com/member/duck1979
